What is Ada Lovelace Day?

Ada Lovelace Day (ALD) is an international celebration of the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Its goal is to raise the profile of women in STEM and, by doing so, create new role models who will encourage more young people to pursue STEM careers and support women who already do.

Founded in 2009 by Suw Charman-Anderson, it is now held every year on the second Tuesday of October, where women working in STEM give short talks about their work or research in an informal, theater-like setting.

But at the end of the day, who was Ada Lovelace?

Who was Ada Lovelace?

Born in 1815, Ada Lovelace collaborated with the British inventor Charles Babbage on his general-purpose computing machine, the “Analytical Engine”. In 1843, Lovelace published what we would now call a computer program to generate Bernoulli Numbers (a sequence of rational numbers used in number theory). While Babbage had written fragments of programs before, Lovelace's was the most complete, the most elaborate, and the first to be published.

More importantly, Lovelace was the first person to foresee the creative potential of the “Analytical Engine”. She explained how it could do much more than simply calculate numbers, and could potentially create music and art, given the right programming and inputs. Her vision of the possibilities of computing was unmatched by any of her peers and went unnoticed for a century.

The program that Lovelace wrote to calculate Bernoulli Numbers is recognized by many historians as the first algorithm intended to be executed by a machine. That is why she is frequently considered the first programmer in history.

Ada Lovelace's legacy today

As a recent tribute, the cryptocurrency of the Cardano blockchain is named “ADA”, in honor of Lovelace.

Suris Code and women in STEM

At Suris Code, we join this international celebration and want to encourage more women to choose science and technology to boost their careers and unleash their creativity. That is why we invite female students with software development skills to learn about the benefits we can offer them.
